My Ruin recorded our cover of "Rid Of Me" by PJ Harvey for our album "The Horror Of Beauty" in 2003.
I love PJ Harvey. Her music has meant so much to me over many years. Her early albums are all so significant in different ways. I can still remember the first time I heard her sing this song. It was shocking, sexy and so very otherworldly.
I've seen PJ live only once but it was un fucking real. Like my first time seeing Nick Cave, I saw her at the Wiltern Theater in LA and her voice carried through the venue on a level I'd never experienced before. It screamed femininity and confrontational female empowerment.
I wanted to cover this song on this album because I felt like it went so perfectly, yet imperfectly with the overall theme as a woman dealing with horrifying double standards of beauty myths & misogyny in the music industry. I was so drawn to it yet very aware and worried I wouldn't be able to do it the justice it deserved being that I'm not a singer or anywhere near the vocal range of PJ Harvey.
I wanted to include it on this album compilation because I'm really proud and happy with our version although some may feel I butchered the fuck out of it. Fuck it, I guess that's the fun of it!
